Mount Gould (13,005') - May 13, 2006

The snow had been melting more, so we decided to try something a little more lofty than Chocolate Peak. At 13,005 feet, Mount Gould is probably the shortest thirteen thousand foot peak in the Sierra. Nonetheless, it's a fairly easy dayhike out of Onion Valley. It's also dog-friendly, which Joe likes.

The hike itself was nice. There were a number of late-season skiers around, who sure seemed to have a better way than snowshoes to get around.

Onion Valley
The view in Onion Valley.
Robin in the trees
Robin making her way through some large trees. The summit is just barely visible here above and to the right of her.
Joe and Katy
Joe changes into lighter clothes as the day warms up as Katy looks on, wondering what kind of trouble she can make.
Robin
Robin's probably wondering if we're there yet.
Joe and the girls
We're almost to the end of the snow here on our way up the flank of Mount Gould.
Kearsarge Pass
Kearsarge Pass and the mountains beyond.
The summit
It doesn't look very far.
Joe and Robin
Up we go.
Jon
Pausing for a breather.
Continuing up
Robin and Joe picking their way up the final slog to the summit.
Summit block
The actual summit block of Mount Gould. Getting to the top requires a delicate fifth class move. We contended ourselves to just poke our noses over.
Looking west
West from the summit.
Tired Katy
Even Katy's a little tired on our way back down.
Tired Julia
Julia was pleased to take a break as we put our snowshoes out. She told us in dog-speak that she was dog-tired. We just groaned at the pun and continued on our way.
