White Mountain (14,246') - July 2, 2006After our usual leisurely breakfast, Robin and I figured that we had enough time to accomplish something worthwhile. White Mountain, the easiest of California's 14ers and the third highest mountain in California, seemed like it would make a fine objective. After the almost two hour drive to the trailhead (which is only 16 miles from Bishop as the buzzard flies), we started up the trail (really a road) around 11:30. We managed the 14 mile round trip in about 7 hours, more than enough time to pick up a pizza at Upper Crust on our way home. |

Jon and White Mountain

Robin on the summit
Robin is peering through the window of a tiny stone structure on the summit. |
Big Plateau
Part of the journey to White Mountain treks through this large alpine meadow. It's at least a couple of miles in length and at an elevation of over 12,500 feet. Due to the lack of water in the White Mountains, this meadow is brown and dry for most of the year, but when we were up there, it was lush and green. |
Marmot
One of the many marmots we saw along the way. |

"Well lookee here - it's a bighorn."
That's why we went up there. Nature! |
